Bill,

It's unlikely we'll do this in the near near future, but it's on the list of features to consider in the future (word highlighting, not necessarily any specific features of Kay Arthur's system).

Craig,

Is there any chance you'll be releasing a Bible marking system (Say a la Kay Arthur) or the ability to highlight individual words as an option to entire verses in future releases. I use Kay's system but am currently limited to print Bibles, if I want to do her inductive method marking.

Thanks for continuing to improve an already great product. I've been using Laridian products since my Palm Pilot and Compaq Aero days and you never cease to amaze me with the next product out. I'm saving for my iPad now....

I have an iPhone and my wife and Android. We look forward to having the PocketBible on Android. For me it is simple. I would like to have the following features found on my iPhone "Go To", "Find" and "Back". Obviously one needs to load and open a bible. This is all I NEED for it to be valuable for me.

We have a "buy it once, own it everywhere" policy. So the books you buy now for Windows Mobile will work on Android when our Android version comes out.

On Windows Mobile, though, you install books from your PC with your phone attached. For Android (like iPhone) you will download books directly into the program from our server. There won't be a separate installation program that runs on your PC.

iPhone users are doing today what you're asking about for Android. Resources they purchased for Windows Mobile can be downloaded into PocketBible for iPhone without purchasing another copy. Android will work the same way. In fact, that's what I'm working on right now.

The English Dictionary looks very useful. However, before I make the purchase of any more resources, I'd like to know if the books I'm purchasing for the MS pocket windows operating system will work with the Android system when it comes out? If not, will there be an upgrade path to convert the books we have already purchased.

I just switched to android yesterday and I can already say there is one thing Laridian has the other Bible programs don't : ALL the versions of the Bible. Which is to say, there is marketshare to be had (not that this wasn't already known). All I can get is KJV and I'm an RSV guy. But eh, I believe there is something in the Bible about patience. I'll go look it up.

I am glad to hear that you all are working to release Android products. I still use my Windows Mobile PDA and will stick with it for now, but will probably move to Android instead of Win Mo 7. I haven't seen any options that rival the features of PocketBible for WinMo, though it would be nice to see an updated interface, more native to the modern OSs of iPhone and Android. I would have a very limited data plan on my Android phone, if any, so I'd need to store the books on the unit. Split screens is a feature that would be hard to give up, though I could understand if it would arrive in a later release.

Thanks for seeking our feedback.

I will go wherever Laridian goes. I do have both platforms - Android Phone with 2.2 and the iPod Touch with ver 4. Android 2.2 - only use a off-brand NIV bible program with very basic features. Still use the iPod touch for devotions and readings. But, as of right now I am leaning toward an iPad mainly because of Laridian. But, I've had all iterations - PB on the palm (10 plus years ago), windows mobile and the iPhone. There's little things I would like corrected on the iPhone (digging down in the menus to synch with the server), but I just don't see a competitive product to Laridian on the market. Hope this helps, definitely love the product however you do it!

View from a "non-developer"....

Found Laridian
Bought PalmOS Version
Bought a few Bible versions
Phone change to Windows Mobile Smartphone
Bought Pocket PC/Windows Mobile, bought "My Utmost for His Highest", a few commentaries, and a couple Bible dictionaries. (Pheww....didn't have to pay FULL price for the OS change).
Phone change to Droid...

.....patiently waiting.

I have found no other droid Bible program that has what Laridian could provide to the Droid.

Other droid Bible program many have good search, but not so easy interface.
Other droid Bible program many have great interface, but limited Bible versions available.
Other droid Bible program many have MANY versions available, but limited dictionaries/commentaries.
Other droid Bible program many have reading programs, but no bookmarking or highlighting.

Other friends at work (100% Christians) and church have the same complaint that, so far, the Droid lacks a superb, not overly expensive, Christian app provider.

So, again…..
.....patiently waiting as I review all the new ‘additional content’ not available the last phone OS change.

Daniel,

PocketBible on your iPhone should have all the functionality you had with DailyReader on your Palm (and more).

To get the free reading plans, simply select "Add/Remove Books" from the menu. Look for "Laridian Reading Plans...". There are seven of them there.

I suspect the program does what you want it to do, but you haven't figured out how to do it yet. Try the built-in Help (question mark on the toolbar). If you have specific complaints or questions about how to do things, it is best to send them to tech support so you can get a personal response.

I have used Laridian products, specifically the Daily Reader which came with the My Bible NIV for my Palm Centro. I found it convenient to be able to choose, for example, to start reading the Old Testament in one year. On a Nokia Nuron, I purchased another NIV from Olive Tree, and was not satisfied with its "bible reader" functionality. Now that I have an IPhone 4, I have downloaded the Pocket Bible, and purchased the One Year Bible, but again I am not satisfied with its "bible reader" functionality. While your website refers to a Laridian Reading Plans freebie, I have not been able to find how to get it, either from the website or from the Apps Store. How can I achieve the Daily Reader functionality on my Iphone 4.

You can search any range of books, chapters and verses you'd like. Just enter the range manually instead of choosing a predefined range. See the extensive built-in help for details.

Thanks for the other suggestions.

Hi guys, Loving the app but I would like to suggest a few ideas (sorry of someone has already suggested them).
1) It would great if you search just the current book as well as the predefined selections. It would be even cooler if you could create your own 'ranges' of books.

2) I notice that the there 8 buttons at the bottom in landscape mode and only 6 in portrait mode. I like the Bookmark mark button but don't always want to turn the display sideways (picky, I know!). Which leads me to suggest is it possible to allow user-defined choice of buttons on the screen as per the iPod Music app where the 'edit' option allows you to configure the buttons to your preference?

3)When you in a book and press the 'goto' button you are taken right back to the whole Bible choice. Sometimes I only want to go to another chapter but the previous chapter, next chapter taps take too long, especially if you're at Is 6 and want to go to Is 66! Would it be possible to, say, highlight the current book so that the Go button takes you straight to the chapter screen without having to reselect the book again?

I hope this is not too much to digest but I think that this app is worthy of such enhancements because it does so much already.

Cheers,
Steve.

Maybe not for the first release if it's hard to do but I wanted to say I really like the way you have moved to continuious scrolling rather than only a chapter at a time or page turning. I like page turning for my Kindle and Nook apps but for the Bible, where I'm often studying a certain group of passages together, it would really be a pain to need to flip back and forth all the time just because I want to see the previous/next verse. The same goes for reading the end of the previous chapter and the beginning of the next chapter. It's very helpful to view them together like the current WinMo release does.

Even if it's optional and maybe not out at first I sure hope this entire Bible/book scrolling does make it to the Android release!

Thank you for your work!

Dear Craig,

I have been a Laridian software user for years and years. I have sorely missed it on my Nexus One. For some of us who just want to get it going on our Androids, what about initial release with even a single window, basic options, Bible/book picker, basic navigation and please, exit on last > button or exit from > button.

I would prefer a book-like page turn with swipe left and right and scroll with swipe up and down - don't know what that costs on programming.

I know it is hard to release something early before it is a "finished" product - you always have the critics and complainers out there to contend with.

I would be glad to run a trial or early Beta release. I have done software development and QA since 1985.

All that said, please be encouraged to get moving!!!!!

Thanks for great products.

David,

I agree it's not a contest as to which is better. In context, my comment about things that were "better" about iPhone had to do with the "feel" of using the device. The iPhone user interface is smoother and more polished. And again, in context, I was summarizing what those who have used both the iPhone and Android were saying.

The goal of the original post, to which this one is a follow-up, was to ask those who had used both platforms to comment on what they liked better about each and what was unique about Android that we should take advantage of in our program. It wasn't to figure out which is "better".

Wow, I would be so happy to have my favorite mobile software back. Your software kept me from switching from Windows Mobile for 4 phones, and it is the ONLY thing I miss from my old phone, but I miss it soooo much! I think most droids are at 2.1 or Froyo by now (or will be soon), so I don't see much call for an earlier build being supported. My favorite features of your software were side by side viewing of the Bible and commentaries, the "history" feature that allowed me to look up a verse and return to the previous verses quickly. When I teach, I would use this to look up 4 or 5 verses and just use the back and forward arrows to go from one to the next. It made my paper Bible seem obsolete!

I, too, would be extremely excited about the possibility of participating in a beta program. I have participated in several, and would love to help your company produce an exceptional product as you always have!

i think the question isn't whether android or iOS is better. as a developer it doesn't really matter, since people choose their phone for all kinds of reasons. If there are enough people who are interested, and you feel it is worth the development costs to not alienate a certain number of your clients, then producing an app will be worthwhile.

For example, I just switched to Android platform. I looked around, and i'll try ipocketbible.com, but if I don't find something, I'll go buy something else, which means that I probably won't buy any more books from Laridian in the future, since I no longer have an app on my phone that can take advantage of it.

I'd much rather be able to stay with Laridian, so I hope an app comes out soon, or the mobile site is pretty useable.

All great suggestions. I like the idea of being able to control the lighting for night time reading. One thing I haven't seen is the ability to build verse files. I have been using an old version of MyBible, this maybe a feature that newer versions already allow. It is helpful to build a file of passages that you can later import into your word processor.
I am looking forward to using MyBible on my Droid Incredible.

Bruce, have you tried iPocketBible.com? It has all your purchased content and displays perfectly on the Droid X - I know because I use it on the Droid X. Just change tap the left or right edge of the "page" to get the menu and change the scroll mode. I think the default scroll mode is for the low res iphones. I'm still looking forward to the native app but this works for now and is better than any free apps I've found since it has all the content I bought. BTW...I use HCSB too! Great translation! I love the way it capitalizes pronouns for God!

With the updated Kindles out, I started thinking again that Pocket Bible on the Kindle would be so much better than anything else out there. I have gone from using your program on the Palm to Windows CE to the Blackberry. It would be great to move to the Kindle instead of reading on my Blackberry during my commute.

All the basic features plus autoscoll would be nice. I like the way the program iis setup on the iPhone., but I miss the autoscoll function.

I would like to see a new feature added that would allow you to store bible verses during service along with notes. A journal feature so to speak. This way I could reference the verses later allowing for deeper study.

I am available for beta testing. I really need something I can work with on my HTC Evo.
