Not only that, but the wireless carriers are offering some pretty good deals if you then subscribe to a wireless data plan. For example, you can get a brand new Verizon XV-6700 for $299, a Pocket PC with:
1. Built-in phone.
2. Bright 320×240 2.8″ color LCD, and a built-in keyboard that “slides out” from the device.
3. Connectivity using Verizon’s EVDO network (DSL speeds), WiFi, Bluetooth, and infrared. Using EVDO and an Internet site for testing access speeds (DSLReports.com), my XV-6700 tested out at 850Kbs.
4. About 26MB of available program storage, and another 26MB of data storage, plus support for storage cards (I added 1GB for $50).
5. Standard Windows Mobile 5.0 software, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, and eMail client.
The data plan is an extra $40/month for unlimited data. This is not a plug for Verizon; Sprint offers the same phone as the PPC-6700, and T-Mobile offers the very similar MDA, and both have similarly-priced voice/data plans.
I had plans to replace my aging 5-year-old IBM laptop soon, but my XV-6700 has put that plan on hold. My primary need for a laptop was for occasional web browsing and remote eMail, and the XV-6700 does all that.
Plus, of course, it stores Laridian’s PocketBible software and a zillion bible translations (ok, 8 so far).
The only question I have is, are people in church going think I’m following along in the bible, or playing a video game?
I use the PPC6700 myself (Sprint), and I agree that it is awesome! Pocket Bible works great on it, and the 6700 can definitely substitute for a laptop a lot of the time.
