PocketBible and Android OS 6 (“Marshmallow”)

[EDIT: These problems have been fixed. If you’re having trouble with OS 6, make sure you’re running the latest verson of PocketBible.]

We are in the process of fixing some problems that keep PocketBible from running correctly under the latest release of Android OS.

The core of this problem is our valiant attempt to continue support for older devices for as long as we can. Both iOS and Android OS tend to be advanced without due diligence paid to compatibility with older versions of the operating system. Here at Laridian we’ve been long-time believers in not abandoning versions of operating systems that our users are still running. However, the practice of our industry is to drop support for devices older than about two years (the length of the typical cell phone contract) and since the companies that create the operating systems also create the tools we use to develop PocketBible, it is often impossible to do anything but go along.

Android OS 6 is incompatible with certain features of PocketBible that are there to support pre-4.x devices. We’re in the process of removing support for those operating systems and will release an update as soon as possible. In the meantime, there is no work-around short of not installing OS 6.

Thanks for the letting me know! I’ve got a Nexus 7 that I’m sure will be be offering the upgrade very soon. I’ll hold off until PB gets things updated.

Will this improve the Amazon Fire 4th generation scrolling display refresh? It is very slow when crossing chapter boundaries.

PocketBible loads one paragraph at a time. As a result, long paragraphs take longer to load. Some chapters of some Bibles consist of only one paragraph for the whole chapter, so the entire chapter has to be loaded when you cross that boundary.

PocketBible reads ahead as you scroll, so it’s possible it’s not the current chapter that is the problem, but something further down in the text.

Hardware speed and capability also makes a difference. The Kindle devices have never been speedy because they are primarily ebook readers and don’t need the speed that a general purpose Android tablet does.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll try to remember to check that this has been addressed before I upgrade my phone to Android 6. Really appreciate that you let us know of concerns like this, so we don’t end up with PB disabled for a time on our devices.

Does this mean I won’t be able to run PB on my ageing NOTE II (currently running V4.2.2) as I doubt there will be any more updates from Samsung?

When will PocketBible be fixed? It appears to be unable to get past the welcome screens at this time. Since Android v6 comes with the phone and I and many others are long time users of Laradian products and have an extensive library, it will be helpful to get this functioning as soon as possible.

It works now. When you first install PocketBible it shows you a series of about 5-6 screens that introduce how it works. At the end of those screens you have the opportunity to register or use the program without registering. If you’re having some kind of trouble getting past this introductory material, contact tech support. We’re not having anyone else report any difficulty here.
