PocketBible for Windows Progress Update #18

This isn’t so much a progress update as it is a quick demo of some of the user interface features of the upcoming PocketBible 3 for Windows.

Recently I got an email from a PocketBible user who didn’t like something about how the current Windows version of PocketBible worked. He was hoping it was not to late to ask for it to be fixed in the new version that we’re working on. I was able to reassure him that the new version won’t work anything like the version he was using. I wanted to send him a link to a video to demonstrate the feature, but while searching past updates it surprised me to find I hadn’t done one of these for a while.

So here’s a very fast tour through the app that touches a lot of different features and is meant mainly to reassure you that you’ll be able to resize the text (a flaw in both the current Windows Desktop and Windows Store versions of PocketBible) and that the toolbar will stay visible all the time (you PocketBible for Windows Store users will know what I’m talking about).

  1. I appreciate the overview. Out of curiosity, will there be touch-friendly options for tablet-PC type machines (Surface and such)?

Overall it looks pretty polished and quite fast. I’m impressed and I know there’s a _lot_ of work that we don’t see going into this product.

    1. The goal is to be touch-friendly. For example, we recently implemented the “hover” feature you see in the video. Obviously you can’t “hover” with a touch screen, so it will use long-press on a link to simulate hover and long-press elsewhere for right-click. We still have issues to work out with touch for doing *everything* but that’s the goal.

  2. That’s incredible! No, it’s not perfect, but WOW is it in great shape. The thoughtfulness you have applied – with today’s devotional switching layouts, for instance – indicates the deep love you have for the product – and for your customers. Thank you in advance.

  3. Thanks so much for the update! I have a quick question. Will this new version of Windows PocketBible allow highlighting of books other than the Bible?

    1. That will require that every version of PocketBible on every platform be updated, along with the program that runs on the server and syncs your data across platforms. So, no, it won’t be in the new version. At least not the first release of that new version. Maybe sometime in the future.

  4. This is looking really positive! A worthy successor to previous Windows versions. I do use touch screens a lot, glad to hear touch friendly.

  5. Looking great, but what a tease! I hope my very old PC can run it as fast as that Mac. I am curious, are you left handed? I ask because you state that the study pane is supposed to be on the left. When I had an android tablet, those resources were on the right, on my currently very old (all of my hardware is now old) iPad it is on the right, on my Windows for Desktop it is on the right. I was so relieved when you showed the ability to put it on the “right” side! LOL

    1. On your iPad, the location of the “toolbox” follows the old Home button. When there’s no Home button, it is following the power connector. So it can be on any side depending on orientation.

On Android, the side-panel is on the right.

On macOS, the Study Panel is on the left where I like it.

In PocketBible for Windows Desktop, I think it can be anywhere, including in the middle of the screen with text on both sides.

We based the initial user interface design on the Mac version, so it got placed on the left and that’s where I always expect it to be. It can be moved to the right in the new Windows version, and the toolbar, which definitely belongs at the top, can be moved to the bottom. 🙂

    1. What? You didn’t like the “Gooberizer” update? 🙂

I intended to post an update on or about August 15, but a weird series of events and circumstances have kept me from being able to build with all the latest contributions from the rest of the team for the last month or so. As soon as I can get an actual up-to-date build I want to show you what we’re doing with a couple of new features that I think are going to be very useful.
